The results this year speak for themselves; we have excellent control of powdery mildew where we are using the Thorvald robots.
I am actually now surprised how quickly our business is adopting this technology; it isn’t as difficult as I expected. The results are enabling us to scale faster.
In my opinion, if you grow strawberries on table top you must have this technology.

Powdery mildew treatment in polytunnels
A fleet of Thorvald robots delivers weekly UV-C light treatments to strawberry plants in polytunnels in the UK. This nighttime treatment is a proven way to control powdery mildew, and the autonomous robots handle the work without manual labour. The result is lower costs, less fungicide use, and a clear environmental benefit.
A sustainable future
“I see robotics as key to decarbonising some in field operations, for example we can use solar charged robots instead of tractors. Robots are a huge part of our future and a partnership with Thorvald is a real key to achieving that, especially through the Robotic Highways project which we are both involved with.”
Oliver Pascall, Clock House Farm

Powdery mildew treatment in open fields
Thorvald’s UV-C technology has been successfully validated in large-scale open-field strawberry production in the US. Our proof-of-concept trials demonstrate that autonomous nighttime treatments effectively control powdery mildew without manual labor, cutting costs, reducing fungicide reliance, and delivering clear environmental gains. While this technology is field-proven, our current commercial focus remains on tabletop production.

Proven ROI. Powerful ESG Impact.
We had a 15 per cent rise in production due to lower mildew levels.
